As part of the Irish Gap Year Adventure and Leadership course our Gappers volunteer with many local charities and community groups. Over the past number of weeks they have been volunteering with Liquid Therapy who are an awesome charity who bring young people facing physical, mental, emotional and behavioural challenges into the ocean environment. Through water, play and surf therapy they encourage each individual to enjoy and reach their aquatic potential, whilst having the most amazing fun! Our gappers had an an amazing day out, see for yourselves….
Liam on Liquid Therapy …
Liquid Therapy Irish Gap YearOver the past few weeks we, the Irish Gap Year students, have been volunteering with a charity called Liquid Therapy. Every week we would help a child with autism surf. My child that I helped surf for the four sessions was named Jude. It was amazing to work with Jude. He is incredibly energetic and not at all afraid to get in the water. He had already surfed before meeting me and was great at standing up in the board. I helped him catch the waves by pulling him into the waves. From there he could stand up on the board and ride the wave in. I gained a lot from this experience. I learned how much I love to help others. I remember how happy I was for Jude when he caught a wave without my help and how surprised he was when I told him. I think it was a great experience for the both of us.
